Assistant Montessori Teacher

Location: Philadelphia, PA  

 

Mountain Laurel Montessori is seeking a nurturing and dedicated Assistant Montessori Teacher to support an authentic, nature-based, child-centered learning environment. This salaried role is ideal for someone passionate about Montessori education, child development, and outdoor learning who thrives in a collaborative, small-school setting.

 

This position will start on June 22, 2026 for Summer Camp (9:00am-4:00 pm) and extend into the school year Monday through Fridays with breaks for winter, spring, and summer and major holidays. 

 

About Mountain Laurel Montessori 

 

Mountain Laurel Montessori is a small, teacher-led microschool serving 31 children ages 3–6 in a mixed-age classroom, offering an authentic Montessori experience grounded in collaboration and shared leadership. Located in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, our program blends Montessori principles with place-based, urban learning and daily outdoor exploration that supports children’s academic, social, and emotional growth. As a community-driven, cooperative school, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, equity-centered environment where educators, families, and students work together to create a connected and accessible learning experience.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide gentle guidance to children while observing, supporting independence, and responding to individual needs in alignment with Montessori principles.

  • Supervise children at all times, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being in accordance with Pennsylvania DHS regulations.

  • Actively engage with students during outdoor learning and play, supporting our commitment to daily outdoor experiences and safe exploration of the natural environment.

  • Support classroom transitions, snack preparation, toileting routines, and daily activities to maintain a calm, predictable, and well-organized environment while consistently meeting staff-to-child ratio requirements.

  • Assist the Lead Teacher in preparing and maintaining the Montessori classroom environment throughout the school day (Monday–Friday, 8:30 am-5:30 pm). Duties include setting out and restoring materials, cleaning and sanitizing works, organizing shelves, caring for classroom furnishings, and ensuring the space remains orderly, inviting, and ready to support children’s independent learning.

  • Oversee and support the after-school program, including supervising children, maintaining a calm and engaging environment, facilitating outdoor play and enrichment activities, and ensuring continued compliance with health, safety, and staff-to-child ratio requirements.

  • Support the implementation of daily schedules and classroom routines to ensure continuity of care and compliance with licensing expectations.

  • Build positive, respectful relationships with children, families, and colleagues to foster a collaborative and welcoming school community.

  • Participate in required professional development and training, and demonstrate a reflective, growth-oriented disposition by actively seeking opportunities to learn, improve practice, and collaborate with colleagues.

  • Encourage children’s social-emotional development by modeling kindness, respect, and inclusive behavior and supporting positive peer interactions.

  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures, including illness management, supervision protocols, and mandated child abuse reporting requirements as required by DHS.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 2+ years experience with children ages 3–6

  • Ability to meet PA DHS background and health requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors daily, regardless of the weather

Preferred Qualifications

  • Montessori experience or training

  • Experience in nature-based or place-based programs

  • Patience, kindness, and a deep respect for children and their natural development.  

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with the Lead Teacher and school staff.  

 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive annual salary of $40,000-$45,000 with health benefits

based on experience and qualifications
